hey, I’m Nathan

I was born in Phoenix in the early 90’s and moved to LA, back to Phoenix, and then to Kansas City before I was seven. (Un)Fortunately, that move was the last one for a minute and I was able to regain my equilibrium.

At least until I was ten and then I got cast as “Jojo” in Seussical: The Musical. Three days in, I told my director I would do it forever. Thank goodness my mother made me go.

Kansas remained home for most of my adult life. I got my BFA in Theatre from Emporia State University in 2017, where I was super active in several organizations outside of the theatre department, including our Student Government, Union Activities Council, Alpha Psi Omega (Founder), among others.

I did a slew of productions in college, including All Shook Up, Uncle Vanya, Blithe Spirit, Too Many Cooks, A Moon for the Misbegotten, South Pacific, The Birds, The Stinky Cheeseman, Big River, Don’t Hug Me and a number of short plays.

I also started directing at Emporia, starting with The Wager, a short play by Neil LaBute (it was 2014, I’ve changed.) From there, I directed Odets’ Waiting for Lefty, Assisted with our productions of The Flick, and Don’t Dress for Dinner, before my capstone production of Pirandello’s Six Characters in Search of an Author.

After college, I moved to Topeka, Kansas. In Topeka, I learned what community could look like. I learned what I wanted from my home. I found friends and loves and belonging.

Then that COVID thing hit. And it forced us to learn how to rebuild community. And what we needed to make community exist again.

In December of 2020, I founded Sunrise Theatre Company. It began as a means to provide opportunities for the vibrant theatre community in Topeka (a wildly underestimated artistic hub); as well as a means to hang out with my friends again.

I directed our first production, The Realistic Joneses, with two couples, brilliant artistic powerhouses all around.

I directed Other Desert Cities that fall and we closed our first season.

Our second season began with God of Carnage, a production that sold out its run; that I had no hand in, other than getting the right people in the room.

We produced three further productions that year, partnering on cabarets, a production of The Rocky Horror Show; and our production of 30/60, based on The Neo-Futurists’ Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.

December 2022, I moved to Chicago, Illinois, sight unseen.

It’s the best decision I ever made.

I met some of the best friends I’ve ever had, brilliant artists in their own ways, and a number of them are my favorite collaborators.

In May of 2024, I started A Short Leap Theatre Company, with my business partner, Josh Leeper.

We run a weekly scene study, “Study Sesh", that allows for deep dives into work without breaking the bank. We’ve produced multiple readings of new and published works, including several plays by DC Cathro.

We produced our first show, Clearing by Beth Hyland, in 2025.

We’re proudest of the community that we’re creating.

I love what I do.

I just wanna hang out with my friends and tell cool stories and do cool stuff, y’know?

I’m really excited to provide opportunities for people where they don’t exist otherwise.

I’m an Equity Membership Candidate, an avid reader, a collector, House DJ thatoneguy, an amateur mixologist, a professional bartender, a catering manager, and above all: driven by connection, I want to know people and stories. I want to tell those stories often and always. I want to help others tell their own stories however I can.

Isaac Newton once said, “If I have seen further, it is because I stand upon the shoulders of giants.”

I want to be someone else’s giant.

Lift while you climb.

Can’t reach? Use my shoulders.
